RbnLive News and Radio is an innovative online advocacy, education, and entertainment platform dedicated to promoting social justice, empowering youths, and building individual confidence for self-reliance in the Upper Guinea Coast of West Africa, with a special focus on the Mano River Union countries—Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire—and Sierra Leone in particular.

In the Upper Guinea Coast and the Mano River Union countries—Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire—social justice challenges are deeply rooted in historical, political, and socio-economic contexts. Issues such as gender inequality, human rights abuses, political marginalization, and social exclusion persist, impacting the lives of vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Youth Empowerment

The youth population in West Africa, particularly within the Mano River Union countries, is growing rapidly, but so are the challenges of unemployment, poverty, political disempowerment, and lack of quality education. We believe that empowered youth are the driving force behind sustainable development and social change.

The appointment of Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio as ECOWAS Chair has intensified scrutiny of the bloc’s democratic credibility. Amid rising challenges, including the emergence of a Francophone counter-bloc, Bio’s contested election raises concerns about double standards. This risks undermining ECOWAS’ normative authority and cohesion. Mid-term credibility risk is high (3.5–4/5), and recovery depends on transparent reforms and a renewed commitment to democratic principles.

Despite having over six decades of independence and experiencing alternating governance by the All People's Congress (APC) and the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), substantial and sustainable development continues to be elusive. Over the past six decades, Sierra Leone’s development has been significantly hindered by entrenched patterns of poor governance across both major political parties. The politicisation of state institutions, pervasive corruption, neglect of human development, and failure to diversify the economy have all contributed to a cycle of underdevelopment and dependency. To chart a new course, Sierra Leone needs a bold reform agenda centred on institutional integrity, inclusive governance, and strategic investments in human capital and infrastructure. Citizens, civil society, and political leaders alike must demand greater accountability and break free from the political inertia that has long held the country back. Only then will Sierra Leone realise the full potential of its people and resources for sustainable development.
WHAT DO APC AND SLPP STAND FOR?
The future of Sierra Leone rests on the quality and integrity of the education we offer today. If we allow the system to remain politicized, we will continue producing compliant followers instead of empowered, visionary leaders. If we neglect to fund it adequately, we deny our nation the very tools required for growth and transformation. However, by embracing education as a national imperative—beyond political agendas—and committing to fund it through transparent, equitable, and locally driven strategies, we can lay the foundation for a resilient, prosperous, and self-reliant Sierra Leone. Let us make education the bridge to a better future—not the battleground of competing interests.
Many Learned and Few Educated -Reason for Slow Development
ECOWAS’s muted response to the controversial 2023 elections in Sierra Leone exposes gaps in its integrity and effectiveness as a guardian of democratic norms. Its failure to uphold transparency and electoral accountability in this instance weakens its moral authority and fosters a sense of regional disillusionment. To regain trust, ECOWAS must demonstrate impartial enforcement, uphold its protocols consistently, and show that no member state is above democratic scrutiny.
The Chairmanship of Bio and ECOWAS CREDIBILITY
In Sierra Leone, only 10% of people have access to safely managed drinking water, leaving 90% reliant on unsafe or unreliable sources. About 58% use unprotected wells or surface water, and although 77% have some water service, it often lacks safety and reliability. The country also faces deep intellectual and social challenges. Ignorance thrives due to poor education and limited access to information, while egoism fuels tribalism and weakens unity. Education is essential—it fosters critical thinking and innovation. Empowered youth can drive reform through civic engagement and digital activism. The government must prioritize educational reform, media freedom, and intellectual leadership. Meanwhile, the proposed $1.5 billion Lungi Bridge aims to link Freetown to the airport but faces criticism due to its limited economic impact. Critics argue the funds could instead transform national infrastructure—building schools, hospitals, water systems, and digital learning platforms—with far greater returns for public health, education, and unity.

Though alternating in power, both have entrenched a winner-takes-all political culture, marked by vengeance, patronage politics, and a quasi-religious loyalty from their supporters. This culture is not just political—it has evolved into a psychological and sociocultural pattern, shaping how citizens relate to power, how institutions are run, and how critical spaces like education function. Underneath it lies a collective emotional underdevelopment, rooted in the historical trauma of slavery, colonial repression, and postcolonial authoritarianism.
APC & SLPP LACK THE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TO LEAD SIERRA LEONE
Sierra Leone is facing a critical governance and legitimacy crisis following the disputed 2023 general elections. Allegations of electoral fraud, rising political tensions, institutional mistrust, and a fragile economy threaten national stability. At the same time, the Tripartite Committee’s reform blueprint provides a pathway for rebuilding the democratic process—but requires an impartial, inclusive structure for implementation.
Transitional Government of National Unity:The Safest Path for Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone has a significant hydropower potential, estimated at approximately 1,200 MW, of which less than 10% is currently utilised. The terrain and rainfall pattern are favourable for both small- and large-scale hydro systems. Other sources and systems can augment the power potential to between 2,500 MW and 5,000 MW. Yet the capital city and other major cities and towns suffer continuous power cuts and outages.
