Through diverse contributions, the book promotes accountability, fairness, inclusion and practical action as foundations for sustainable peace, development and national progress in Sierra Leone.

This chapter examines how Sierra Leone’s cultural traditions, historical change and cash economy have shaped behaviours linked to corruption. Drawing on 1979 research on locus of control, it argues that weak personal responsibility can reinforce dependency and bribery. Low wages, Western-influenced lifestyles, social status expectations and extended-family obligations further create financial pressures that may encourage corrupt practices.
